Dr Sutton is a member of the Council of the National Health and Medical Council and sits on its Audit Committee. He is a member of the Innovation Grants Committee within the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science & Research. He is also a Non-Executive Director of NewSouth Innovations Pty Ltd (formerly Unisearch Ltd.) and a director of the North Shore Heart Research Foundation and is on the Board of the University of NSW Foundation.

Dr Sutton has had a long career in the international medical device industry. Most recently he was Managing Director and CEO of Ventracor Limited, a position he held to his retirement in 2006. Prior to that he was CEO of Sirtex Limited.

Dr Sutton holds a PhD from the School of Chemical Engineering of the University of New South Wales and is a and Life Member of the UNSW Sports Association. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
