Associate Professor with the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at the UNSW, Co-Director of the Centre for Implantable Bionics and the Australian Vision Prosthesis Group.

His career began in the Silicon Valley semiconductor industryand since migrating to Australia in 1991, has focused on medical implants. His rich research history includes design of cochlear implants for the deaf, cardiac assist devices, functional electrical stimulation for the paralysed, and bionic vision for the blind. He holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Vision Prosthesis) from UNSW on top of Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from the California State University. He holds a number of patents in implantable bionics, and has published more than 70 peer-reviewed academic articles in the field of implantable neuroprosthesis.
