Jonathan Crowston is the Ringland Anderson Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne.


Concurrent to the University positions Jonathan is Managing Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia and holds a medical appointment at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital.
He graduated from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, with an MBBS and an intercalated Bachelor of Science Degree in Immunopathology. He subsequently completed a PhD at the Institute of Ophthalmology/University College London as a Wellcome Trust Vision Research Fellow prior to ophthalmology registrar training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
Jonathan gained subspecialty training in glaucoma with fellowships at Westmead Hospital, NSW and then at the Hamilton Glaucoma Centre, University California San Diego.

He was subsequently appointed to the faculty. Jonathan moved to Melbourne from San Diego in 2006 when he was appointed Professor of Glaucoma at the University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology.
Professor Crowston runs the Glaucoma Research Laboratory at CERA and is actively engaged in translational research from the molecular and cellular level through to clinical studies.
Current research is focused on neurodegeneration of the retina and optic nerve and the impact of aging of the optic nerve.  
He has received a number of awards for his research in the UK and USA.  He was appointed NHMRC Practitioner Fellow in 2009 and receives research funding from a wide range of sources including NHMRC and the Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia.

Jonathan has authored over 70 manuscripts. He has also co-authored three books and four book chapters. He maintains active research collaborations with partners in Australia, New Zealand the US, Germany, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. He serves on numerous editorial boards, grant review panels and conference organising committees and is regularly invited to present lectures in Australia and overseas. He continues to teach and in 2008 was recognised with the Excellence in Teaching award from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He was recently appointed Associate Executive Vice President of the World Glaucoma Association.
