He previously held the position of Senior Director of Research, Research and Development, at Johnson & Johnson Research, where he oversaw or led a number of discovery and drug development projects in the areas of virology, cancer, diagnostics, RNA therapeutics and ophthalmology over a 6 year period. He was a member of the Johnson & Johnson DC Ophthalmology Task Force in 2005-2006. Prior to his involvement in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr Rivory was a successful research leader in the area of cancer pharmacology culminating in his position as Head of the Cancer Pharmacology Laboratory of the Sydney Cancer Centre (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital), a position he held from 1997 to 2005.
Dr Rivory graduated in 1985 with a BVSc (Hons) from the University of Queensland from which he subsequently received a PhD in 1991 for research in hepatic physiology and pharmacology.
Dr Rivory carried out his post-doctoral studies as an INSERM-NHMRC Fellow in Bordeaux, France, on aspects of the pharmacology of the cancer drug irinotecan (now known as Camptosar®).
A past editor of the British Journal of Pharmacology and the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Dr Rivory has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters and is a named inventor on 4 published patent applications. Dr Rivory has consulted for pharmaceutical companies and Government regulatory bodies, including the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and is a past member of the Pharmaceutical Sub-Committee of the TGA.
Dr Rivory is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD).
