Associate Professor Nick Barnes is a Partner Investigator for BVA and scientific leader on research for vision processing strategies and techniques.

Working with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, research to date has focused on identifying key tasks that a bionic eye must enable, and developing vision processing strategies that can facilitate those tasks.

Nick is a Principal Researcher and Research Group Manager at NICTA, Australia's national research centre of excellence in Information and Communication Technology at the Canberra Research Laboratories.  He has been conducting research in the areas of computer vision, vision for driver and low vision assistance, and vision for vehicle guidance for 15 years.
He also has contributed to research in the fields of neuroscience via medical image processing, and computational models of aspects of biological vision. He has more than 70 peer reviewed scientific publications and is co-inventor of three patent applications.

At NICTA he leads a team investigating new non-surgical assistive devices for the visually-impaired using computer vision technologies. He also leads Embedded Systems in the Canberra Research Laboratories at NICTA, which is internationally recognised as a leading group in computer vision processing.
