Professor Skafidas' research interests include: wireless communications systems, systems on a chip, high speed mixed signal and radio frequency microelectronics, wireless power transfer and neural interface circuits.
He leads NICTA's research in the development of the next generation retinal stimulation prosthesis. This research builds on the earlier research by Professor Skafidas and his colleagues in developing the world’s first next generation CMOS millimetre wave wireless communications transceiver. This transceiver achieves data rates in excess of 4Gbps (ten times that of current systems) at a small fraction (one tenth) of the cost.
Prior to joining NICTA in 2004, Professor Skafidas was a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Bandspeed, a US-based developer of wireless semiconductor products. In this role, Professor Skafidas led multinational teams that have developed chipsets for ADSL/VDSL/Bluetooth™ and 802.11 a/b/g systems that are being used by leading international companies to build wireless consumer products. At Bandspeed Professor Skafidas was the co-inventor of AFH, a critical component of Bluetooth™ coexistence technology. To date AFH technology has been incorporated in excess of a billion Bluetooth™ devices and increasing.
Professor Skafidas has held leadership positions at standards committees and standardization bodies. He is currently one of the editors of the IEEE 802.15.3c standards body working towards systems operating in the millimetre wave and delivering gigabit wireless speeds.
Professor Skafidas is a Senior Member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers (FIEAust) and a Voting Member of the 802 Standards Committee.
Professor Skafidas has over 80 peer reviewed scientific publications, 20 patents granted and 25 patent applications pending in the areas microelectronics, wireless and other communication systems.
Professor Skafidas graduated with a BE (Hons), BSc, MEngSc and PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Melbourne.
